STRIKER Lewis Powell made it six goals in six games for the season as Chippenham maintained their 100 per cent home record on Bank Holiday Monday.

After disappointing defending nearly led to their downfall two days earlier, manager Adie Mings made five changes to the side who drew at Leamington with former Melksham Town centre back Greg Tindle replacing the out-of-sorts Steve Casey.

The new-look back four was not troubled in the first half though as Chippenham controlled the early tempo with Scott Lye, who shook off bruised ribs to play in the fixture, instrumental in midfield.

New signing Jon Davies went close on 13 minutes but his 20-yard shot drifted just wide of keeper Danny Greaves’ left-hand post.

Despite their superior ball retention, the Bluebirds were restricted to long-shots for most of the first half with Shaun Benison, on his first start of the season, blocking Lye’s scorching drive on 15 minutes.

A Shaun Lamb free kick also went harmlessly wide moments later.

Mings kept faith with the same team for the second half leaving top-scorer Powell, suffering with a neck strain, on the substitutes’ bench.

Tindle should have scored with a header from a Jon Davies corner early on but Chippenham were rewarded for their patience on 51 minutes, courtesy of the new signing.

After picking up the ball on the right wing, the former Salisbury City man showed typicall slick footwork and pace to beat his two markers and deliver a pin-point ball to the back post where Benison gleefully tapped into an open net.

Luke Gullick should have doubled the lead minutes later but was denied by the outstretched legs of Greaves, before Clevedon enjoyed their best spell in attack.

Powell came off the bench on 84 minutes, with a nervy ending in store, replacing man of the match Davies, and was given a chance to continue his prolific goalscoring form on 90 minutes when Gulick was fouled in the area.

The Welshman, who missed a spot kick against Hemel Hempstead last week, made no mistake to maintain the Bluebirds’ unbeaten record in 2009/10.
