Mourners packed into St Michael’s Church in Melksham on Monday to remember 38-year-old Lisa Downs, who died following a fall on Christmas Day.

Miss Downs, a former pupil of George Ward School in Melksham, died after slipping on icy steps outside a house, where she had been attending a party on Christmas Day in West Yorkshire.

Her father Michael Downs, of Chapel Knapp, near Corsham, carried the coffin alongside his daughter Cara-Mia Briggs, her nephew Shannon Berry, 19, and brother-in-law Mark Briggs.

Max Bruch’s violin concerto was playing as the coffin was taken into the church, in Canon Square.

There were readings from the Bible and a tribute from Mrs Briggs to her sister, before the congregation sang one of Miss Downs’ favourite songs, Jerusalem, which was also played at her two-month-old baby daughter Amber’s funeral.

The service ended with Pietro Mascagni’s Intermezzo.

A service followed at West Wiltshire Crematorium in Semington where Miss Downs’ coffin was brought in to Sinead O’Connor’s Nothing Compares.

Mrs Briggs then paid tribute and Miss Downs’ niece Natasha Lampard, 23, spoke of her memories of her aunt, before reading a poem she had written.

The service ended with Susan Boyle’s version of Wild Horses.
