A medic called to the scene of a three-car crash near Trowbridge has described the 'chaotic' scene which met him when he arrived.

Adam Stark, 23, from Winsley, near Bradford on Avon, is still critically ill ater the crash on the A363 at Trowle Common on Tuesday evening.

Mr Stark, who was driving a blue Honda Civic, was taken to the Royal United Hospital in Bath after he was in collision with a silver Ford Focus and a silver Hyundai.

A second man was also taken to the Royal United Hospital with injuries to his neck and leg, but his condition is less serious.

Dr Adam Brownhill, a volunteer medic with South West Intervention For Trauma team, tended to one of the other casualties of the collision, a woman in her 20s.

He said: “I got there just as the ambulance was taking the seriously injured casualty to hospital so I didn’t see him, but I did see the scene and it was one of chaos.

“There were three cars all mangled together and it was clearly very serious and looked like it could have happened at quite a high speed.

“I treated one casualty at the scene and she was very shocked.

“She only had minor injuries but was in deep, deep shock and I haven’t seen someone that upset for a long time.

“She had a little bit of whiplash and cuts and abrasions.”

Tim Burnham, the owner of the nearby Old Manor Hotel in Trowle, said he and his staff had heard ambulances but only realised what had happened when one of them tried to leave and found themselves in a police roadblock.

He said: “I think the police were quite surprised to see someone driving down the road and wouldn’t let the member of staff leave until about 7pm.

“There are a lot of accidents down there. I think there have been about three in the last six months.

“It’s quite a fast turn and people sometimes clip the curb.”

The road reopened at about 12.30am yesterday.

Police are keen to trace the drivers of other vehicles travelling from Trowbridge to Bradford on Avon along the road at the same time.

Anyone with any relevant information should call PC James Trafford at Wiltshire Police on 0845 408 7000.
