Members of the Conservative Club in Westbury have raised more than £1,500 for Help for Heroes by hosting a summer ball.

The event, held last month, was organised by club member Heather Bates, of Orchard Road, Westbury.

The club presented the charity with a cheque for £1,600 on Monday.

Mrs Bates said: “We haven’t had a ball there for a while and they always go down well. We wanted to do it for a good cause and we couldn’t think of a better one.

“You think about the servicemen and women whenever there is a repatriation at Wootton Bassett.

“We raised £1,200 on the night and we have been raising more since. We had some Help for Heroes bands in last week and they were all sold by Saturday. We also had a tin on the bar for people to make donations.”

As well as music and a champagne reception, the evening included a raffle.

TES Transmissions of West Wilts Trading in Westbury donated a gallon bottle of Bell’s Whisky, which was auctioned for £380.
