A village pub has raised almost £1,000 for Help For Heroes after hosting a music festival on Saturday.

The White Hart in Atworth, hosted its second summer music festival on Saturday afternoon to raise money for the charity.

As well as live music all afternoon and into the evening, the event included activities for children including face painting and a bouncy castle, as well as stalls, a raffle and a barbecue.

Landlord Nathan Cortilla said: “It was absolutely brilliant. We had a really good turnout. I don’t know exact numbers but we had a steady flow of people all day.

“We still have some charity pots to count, but so far we’ve raised over £900. All that money is going to Help For Heroes, we’re glad we could do it and we’re pleased with the result.”

Mr Cortilla and his partner Kirsty Sythes had wanted to use the event to raise money for a charity, and chose Help For Heroes because many of the pub’s regulars have been in the army, and Miss Sythes brother is also a soldier.

The pub charged £1 entry to the festival, which was held in the pub’s car park during the day, and moved inside in the evening, with acoustic performances.

Mr Cortilla added: “All the music was really good. Recode played in the afternoon and then did an acoustic set in the evening and were really popular.”

Mr Cortilla and Miss Sythes are so pleased with how the event went that they are planning to make it a yearly highlight.

Mr Cortilla said: “Last year was the first time, and it was more of a cider festival. This time there was a lot more organised and a lot more planned. We’d like to do the same thing next year, and for as long as we’re here really.

“I’d like to say thank you to everyone who volunteered and helped collect donations, and to everyone who came along and donated to the cause.”

* The previous Saturday, Kingsdown Golf Club raised a total of £4,000 for Help for Heroes.

Taking part in the National Golf Club challenge, the club was well supported by members on the day, with a raffle alone raising £1,000. Tee sponsorship, an auction, chipping competition, a bags and books stall and a Help for Heroes merchandise stall all helped towards the total.

Wingfield’s Nick Quintin topped the men’s scoring with 42 points on countback from Mark Stanley, and Denise Greatorex won the ladies honours on countback from Ros Thomson, both with 39.
