POLICE in Wiltshire will not be made to join with neighbouring forces after the Prime Minister admitted it would not be sensible to impose mergers.
Answering questions from opposition leader David Cameron on Wednesday Tony Blair said police mergers were not off the agenda but added it would not be sensible to force them through.
Under proposals by the Home Office, Wiltshire Police were facing a merger with two or more other forces in the south west. Chief Constable Martin Richards and Wiltshire Police Authority Chairman Bertie Woolnough welcomed the decision not to force police into merging.
A joint statement said: "We are pleased that today's announcement by the Home Office means new structures will not be imposed upon Wiltshire in a way which precluded due consideration and time for consultation."
