A guest appearance by actor James Fleet, teachers in the stocks and a tug of war were all part of the fun at the Holt Village fete on Saturday.

Mr Fleet, best known for his roles as Hugo Horton in The Vicar of Dibley and Tom in Four Weddings and a Funeral, was invited to officially open the fete, which this year had a medieval theme.

The weather stayed kind as visitors enjoyed a bird of prey flying display, archery competitions, strolling minstrels and the usual stalls. Fiona Drysdale, a member of the Holt fete committee, said: "It was all good fun. I think everyone would agree there was a great community spirit, which is what these things are all about.

"James was extremely good. He said the village was just like Dibley especially as we have a female vicar. "He enjoyed the Holt School Morris Minors because they reminded him of when he did Morris dancing as a child.

"He really got involved and didn't just turn up, cut the ribbon and leave."

The tug of war competition was also a great success while teachers from the school bravely faced 15-minute stints in the stocks.

The fete raised about £2,000, which will be split between Holt Primary School and St Katharine's Church.
