A rigger from Westbury, who is used to working on glamorous television shows such as Who Wants To Be A Millionaire, will be trading TV for a trek in aid of Help for Heroes.

Chris Bew will be joined by some of his television friends, including 10 riggers, one unit manager, one camera supervisor, as well as two police officers, in a 100-mile trek followed by a climb of Ben Nevis on Sunday, November 28.

The group, who will set off at 5.30am, expect to complete the trek within six days ending with a gruelling 4,409ft climb up the highest mountain in the British Isles.

Mr Bew, who has lived in Bratton Road, Westbury, for seven years, knows how hard the challenge will be.

“It was all decided round the pub table in London,” he said. “We were planning to do a walk and we thought we may as well do it for charity and Help For Heroes is a great cause.

“We’ve all worked together in the industry, apart from the police officers, and will be coming from all parts of the country to take on the challenge.

“We’re taking a cameraman with us so as we go along we’ll be putting photographs on our website as well as a video diary.

“It’s going to us different muscles. I only usually use my left arm for drinking my pint.

“We’re all quite physical because of the jobs we do but I’m sure it’s going to be tough.”

The rigger’s work for CTV Outside Broadcasting has taken him all over the country during the past 15 years.

“You name it I’ve just about done it in telly,” he said.

“From Who Wants To Be A Millionaire to the Ryder Cup and the FA Cup – I did Harrow FC last weekend and I’m covering Arsenal this weekend so it’s one scale to the other.”

The group have already raised £5,600 for the charity, but you can donate more at www.bmycharity.com/highlands4heroes or by visiting Etc Etc in White Hart Yard, Trowbridge.

* A music night and raffle is being planned at the Cross Keys in Great Bedwyn in aid of Help for Heroes by customer Valerie Dalgleish.

Mrs Dalgleish has managed to book singer Frankie Martin, who is currently on a non-stop 366-day tour of Britain playing at 366 different venues and each time in aid of Help for Heroes.

She said: “Like so many people I have relatives in the forces who have been in places like Afghanistan and everyone understands and appreciates what Help for Heroes is doing for our injured soldiers.”

Crooner Frankie Martin is well into his non-stop pub tour and sings favourites from Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Nat King Cole, Bobby Darin and more.

He will be at the Cross Keys on December 3, singing from 9pm, and tickets are available from the pub for £6.

Bear Grylls, who lives near Ramsbury, has also pledged signed merchandise.

* Music is also coming to Compton Bassett Village Hall tomorrow (Saturday) when Nick Treharne and The One Night Band will perform music from the Sixties to the Nineties in aid of Help for Heroes and the village cricket club.

Mr Treharne said: “The band will not be receiving a performance fee or expenses, so all profits will go to the two charities and the night will also provide some revenue for the village hall.”

Doors open at 7.30pm. For tickets call 01249 760273.
