Moustaches of all shapes and sizes have been on display in November, to promote awareness of cancers affecting men.

Charity event Movember has seen firefighters in Trowbridge sporting moustaches while carrying out their life-saving work. The team hope to have raised £200.

Firefighters were joined in the challenge by workshop staff, fire safety staff and logistical staff.

Matthew Maggs, crew manager, said: “When we have been out and about on jobs people have been commenting on our moustaches, but that is what we want.

“It is our chance to give something back to the community by raising the profile of this very worthy cause.

“The guys could not wait to get rid of the moustaches. Mine was been a pain in the backside and not to mention my wife didn’t want to kiss me while I still had it.”

Doctors and staff at Bradford Road Medical Centre in Trowbridge also took part.

Dr Steve Rowlands said: “It is a good way to raise awareness, men get a pretty poor deal when it comes to health screenings and promotion.

“It was awful having a moustache for a month, and my wife hated it. But I think it did its job, we had lots of people coming in and asking about it.”

Also taking part were 22 staff at Trowbridge-based supplier The Consortium, including four of the company’s directors. As they had to start the month clean-shaven, one member of staff had to shave off his beard of 23 years to take part.

Other Movember moustache-growers included 14 teachers and teaching assistants at St Laurence School in Bradford on Avon.

Last year Movember worldwide raised £26m. In the UK, funds go to The Prostate Cancer Charity, the most common cancer affecting men in the country.
