An action group of 10 mums is meeting school bosses regularly to help encouraging other parents to get behind the school.

In November the school was placed in special measures by Ofsted inspectors who said it had failed to provide an acceptable standard of education.

Ros Huggins, whose daughter is in Year 11, said: “We have been fortunate she has really enjoyed being at the school and we’ve never had any problems.

Hopefully this will make it easier for me to help the school.

“I was quite surprised with the Ofsted result although there have been areas where we have been concerned and it has taken a little time to get it sorted.

“We have a younger daughter who didn’t settle well but they were very supportive in helping her move to another school. As parents all our children are very different and require different levels of support.

“I am hoping we can try and improve the areas of concern and parents need to be there to support the school in doing that.

It is not for their sake, it is for our children’s sake.”

Ellen Moore, who has children in Years 8 and 10, said: “All of my children have had a good experience here. The children come out more well-rounded.

“But there should be more support from parents and that is why I have become involved with the group.

“I think overall there was a lot of different reaction to the Ofsted decision, but if anything it will help the school in the long run.”

Chairman of governors David Baker has led a new initiative to create a video promoting the school.

Governors and senior staff members will embark on a roadshow around primary schools in the area to demonstrate the school is still a good place to study.

Mr Baker said: “We went around the school filming lessons, talking to staff and speaking to students about their experiences. We hope the video will encourage parents to send their children here.

“While filming I could see a big difference already. The teaching we saw was superb and there was a positive mood throughout the school.

“By getting this group on board too, I hope we are really able to engage with parents once again as that will be one of the keys to our success.”

The group will monitor the school’s progress through special measures.
