The multi-cultural event organised by West Wiltshire Interfaith Group and West Wilts Community Club, promoted the idea of setting up a cultural supplementary school in West Wiltshire.

Maths and English sessions were on offer during the day as well as the chance to try African drumming and pottery.

One of the highlights was a presentation from historian Jahan Mahmood, who gave an insight into the valuable contribution made by people of different faiths and cultures during the First and Second World Wars. As part of his presentation, Mr Mahmood displayed a decommissioned German MG42 machine gun and a 303 Enfield rifle.

Those who attended came from different age groups and cultural backgrounds and the event finished with everyone getting together to share food and a mass jamming session involving drumming and dancing.

Funding for Saturday’s event came from ASDA and the BA14 Culture group.

“While filming I could see a big difference already. The teaching we saw was superb and there was a positive mood throughout the school.

“By getting this group on board too, I hope we are really able to engage with parents once again as that will be one of the keys to our success.”

The group will monitor the school’s progress through special measures.
