A BRADFORD on Avon girl attended a Salisbury Olympic Torch Tour event to mark her being nominated to carry the torch in next year’s relay.
Bryony Blyth, 16, was nominated by Wiltshire Council because of her hard work in the town.
Bryony, who has Asperger’s Syndrome, is regarded as a role model because of her efforts with Bradford on Avon’s Youth Development Centre and her hard work with the Wiltshire Assembly of Youth.
At the event held at Salisbury’s Guildhall on August 8, Bryony had the opportunity to hold a prototype London 2012 Olympic Torch which she might be carrying through the streets of Wiltshire, if she’s selected to be part of the relay.
Bryony said: “It was such an exciting day. It was good to see the torch, which I might hopefully be carrying next year. I’ve now just got to wait and see if I get selected but I’m honoured to have been nominated. I’m amazed that I may be part of the Games as it is going to be such a massive thing for the country.
“It is significant that so many young people are being nominated, as they get such a bad press in this country and I want to show we can do good positive things.”
Leader of Wiltshire Council Jane Scott OBE was present at the roadshow event, as was fellow nominee Cameron Corson from Salisbury, mayor of Salisbury Cllr John Abbot and representatives from the Olympic Games’ sponsors.
Cllr Scott, said: “It is wonderful to see these young people being nominated to carry the Olympic Torch as it makes its way through our county next year.
“This really is a once-in-a lifetime opportunity for Wiltshire residents to be part of history.
“There are many unsung heroes out there and nominating them to carry the Olympic Torch is a wonderful way of recognising their contribution.”
Mrs Scott said there would be more London 2012 Olympic roadshows taking place across Wiltshire in September to encourage more nominations for worthy people to carry Olympic Flame on its Wiltshire leg of the relay next year.
The nomination deadline for potential torchbearers is September 12.
