A GREEN-FINGERED headteacher is hoping to create a ‘garden of dreams’ at her Trowbridge school after it was awarded a £1,600 grant.

Walwayne Court Primary School’s headteacher Bev Kenyon got the grant from The Green Insurance Company and it will pave the way for a new child-orientated garden at the school which will be open to all children.

The site will boast a multi-sensory garden which will be used for workshops, meetings and assemblies. It will also be a calm retreat where children can escape during playtime.

There will also be an allotment where children can learn about organic gardening by growing food all year round.

A children’s kitchen will also accommodate up to 30 children where they learn how to cook.

It comes after the school planted trees donated by the Woodland Trust in its grounds on Saturday.

Mrs Kenyon said: “We’re thrilled that our application was successful and we are extremely excited to begin the next stage of our development.

“We want to make environmental education a core part of our curriculum.

“Our children and members of the community will have a perfect environment in which to learn.

“In particular, our disadvantaged children will benefit from the therapeutic aspect of the planned space.

“We want our children to be immersed in the magic that is all around them, rather than being stuck in classrooms. We believe this will help us to educate better citizens for the future.”

Within the garden the school plans to create a barefoot sensory walk where five different textures can be experienced through touching, pots of herbs can be picked and smelled and a large stainless steel sphere at the end of the walk can be looked at, climbed in or touched.

A musical area will also be built, with spiral chimes being positioned around a circular path, easily accessible for everyone, whatever their size or mobility.

The garden will also include a paved area and shed with water features, a story telling chair, and an area to store outdoor cushions, books and equipment.

The garden will be opened up during the summer holidays to children who attend other primary schools in Trowbridge.
