Youngsters at Sutton Veny Primary School were shortlisted for their entry in the national Climate Week Challenge last week.

The school’s entry was designed by four nine-year-olds – Scarlett Clark-Taylor, Zac Cuff, Mackenzie Hutchings and Teddy Mintoe – and is based on an idea for a Friendly Cow Oxygenator to process methane produced by cattle.

The winner will be chosen on Monday, by a panel of BBC television presenters, including Liz Bonnin of Bang Goes the Theory, Kate Humble of Springwatch and Bruce Parry of Tribe, alongside Met Office staff.

The contest was open to everyone, with teams of four to six students competing within age categories to complete the challenge on March 12.

The pupils’ class teacher, Charlotte White, said: “Being shortlisted has been a wonderful surprise for the whole school.

“The challenge provided an inspiring learning experience.

“The children were very engaged, motivated and excited to be inventors of the future and make a difference to the environment.”
