Panic buying of petrol continued on Friday in west Wiltshire as a strike by tanker drivers looked imminent.

Long queues extended from many of the county’s petrol stations again on Friday morning, some stretching out on to main roads as motorists stocked up on fuel.

In Trowbridge heavy traffic was seen around the Tesco and Applegreen garages as motorists tried to enter forecourts.

Panic buying continued in Warminster this morning, with the East Street Esso Garage running out of stock. Cars were queuing out into the road at Morrisons on Weymouth Street.

Westbury’s Total Garage in Warminster Road was also experiencing a higher than average flow of customers.

There were still longer than normal queues in Corsham at the Texaco garage, in Pickwick Road, this morning and at 9am it received a delivery of fuel which should prevent tanks at the station from running out during the day.

Nicky Osborn, manager at Applegreen garage, on Bythesea Road, Trowbridge, said on Thursday: “It has been manic this morning. We’ve been rushed off our feet.

“But our fuel levels are doing ok and fresh supplies are readily available, we just need to order it.”

Tanker drivers have voted to take strike action over safety standards and terms and conditions but will have to give seven days notice.
