The jury in the trial of a Melksham man for the manslaughter of Trowbridge builder Adrian Cooksey will visit the crime scene today.

The 12 person jury, along with police, the judge and legal teams, will visit Melksham to acquaint themselves with Spa Road, where Mr Cooksey, 50, was discovered unconscious in the early hours of March 8 2009.

He died later that morning from head injuries, and the court has heard this week that he suffered a heavy blow to the face, causing him to fall backwards and hit his head on the ground, fracturing his skull.

His childhood friend Richard Elmes, 51, of Semington Road, Melksham, who was out drinking with Mr Cooksey that night, denies manslaughter. He has admitted a charge of perjury relating to his testimony at a 2010 trial of Thomas Minshull, who was acquitted of Mr Cooksey's manslaughter.

Yesterday the court was read transcripts of covert recordings between Mr Elmes and his wife Theresa where he admits being in Spa Road with Mr Cooksey and getting into an argument with him, which he had previously denied.

The court also heard evidence from Thomas Minshull and his friend Jamie Bristow who had been walking to Mr Minshull's home in Spa Road after a night out at around the time that Mr Cooksey was assaulted.

Mr Minshull denied seeing anyone in Spa Road or getting into a confrontation with anyone. Mr Bristow said he was too drunk to remember the walk back from the Acropolis takeaway in Church Street.

Court will resume tomorrow when the prosecution is expected to complete its case. The defence will start its case on Tuesday.
