THERE was a nostalgic air in Lacock last weekend as the village and Whitehall Garden Centre hosted 1940s events.

At the garden centre, in Corsham Road, Dig for Victory saw a marquee transformed into a 1940s high street for a street party which featured period music and dancing from the Blitz Buddies.

There were also fashion shows, dancing lessons and displays.

Sue Hardy, of the marketing team at the centre, said: “We were jam-packed with people.

“We had a fly-past from a Lancaster Bomber, which was just fantastic.

“There was a great general atmosphere on the day.

“Families really seemed to enjoy it and we had lots of visitors in 1940s clothing.”

Around 3,000 people also visited the village for the launch of a new 1940s military event.

Over the two-day event, called Lacock At War, organised by the West Wiltshire Military Vehicle Trust, the parish council’s playing fields were taken over by military vehicles, historical re-enactors and exhibits.

Jason Close, one of the organisers, said: “It was a massive success and the weather did go a long way in drawing the crowds.

“Many of the exhibitors said it was the best event they’ve been involved with this year.”

The event featured military vehicles from all eras, live performances, trade stalls and Home Front displays with other events also taking place in the village.

Money raised over the two days will go towards the vehicle trust’s future events.

Mr Close said: “One of the highlights of the weekend was Madeline Brown – a singing sensation who kept the crowds entertained.

“A big thanks needs to go to Wadsworth, the landlords of the Red Lion, the parish council, all the volunteers and everyone who attended who helped make the event an absolute blast.”
