More flood defences are being put in place in Bradford on Avon this afternoon as the Environment Agency warns the town that water levels will peak at 11pm tonight.

Barriers were put in place in the Bull Pit last night but are now being erected in Westbury Gardens as the water starts to seep through the wall.

It is hoped that this will help protect both sides of the town and will prevent similar scenes to those witnessed on Christmas Eve when flood waters forced the closure of the Town Bridge until Boxing Day.

The Environment Agency announced via its Twitter account that river levels will peak at 11pm but expect that it will be one metre lower than what is was at Christmas.

Residents and businesses in the town are continuing to get river level updates via the webcam that was installed at the Bridge Tea Rooms building last month.

The camera takes a photograph of the Town Bridge every hour and uploads it onto the Twitter account, Facebook page and website under BoA Bridge Watch.

Tom Vaughton, of Varn Media, who came up with the idea for the camera, said: “Everyone is very jumpy since the Christmas Eve floods so people are pleased something is being done.

“We are trying to build BoA Bridge Watch into a hub and are encouraging people to Tweet their pictures into us.”
