Aspiring journalists from Westwood with Iford Primary School experienced life in a newspaper office when they visited the Wiltshire Times on Friday.

Six pupils from Year 5 and 6 have recently set up their own school newspaper, That’s Just Westwood, and were keen to see how they could improve the fortnightly edition, which is distributed to parents.

They toured the Duke Street offices, saw how the newspaper has developed over the years and watched the process of putting copy onto the page, all the time asking questions and writing notes.

Year 6 pupil Natasha Batten is editor of That’s Just Westwood and said: “The most interesting thing is the way the computers work. It is so complicated but really cool.”

Isabella Mavridis, from Year 5, said the best bit was looking at the “huge, old fashioned” newspapers that date back to the mid 1800s.

“Today has taught us how to get information and do more stuff,” she added.

The group, led by teacher Emma Tyler, had their photograph taken outside the office by Wiltshire Times photographer Glenn Phillips, who then showed them how to upload them, how to pick the best picture for print and what programmes to use.

While searching the archives, the group came across reception class pictures they had posed for several years earlier and took a printed copy away as a memento.

Year 6 pupil Ellie-May Wyartt, who wants to write for magazines one day, said: “Today has given us lots of ideas.”
