There was plenty of clowning around at Churchfields Primary School as pupils learned about the circus this month.

A circus workshop visited the Monkton Farleigh school to teach them a range of skills such as juggling with scarves, riding a unicycle and plate spinning.

The children dressed up as characters from the circus, including clowns, acrobats and tigers.

Teacher Michele Pile said: “This term, Reception and Key Stage one pupils from the school have been learning about the circus through an exciting unit of work, ‘The Circus is Coming to Town’, from the International Primary Curriculum.

“It is really gratifying to see our children come to school smiling, enjoying the day and learning about what is involved in performing in the circus, but also promoting a circus.

We all had a great day – it’s what we call a ‘wow day’ and they really stand out in the term for creating life-long memories for pupils and teachers alike.”

Pupils also learned about the circus through making models, designing a persuasive poster to attend the circus, as well as researching the history of the Roman Circus.
