RESIDENTS in Bradford on Avon have donated supplies to charities aiding Syrian refugee families after a Big Night In event on Saturday (October 10).
Twenty three big boxes of essential clothing and hygiene supplies were packed off to the Greek Solidarity Movement, based in London, which provides volunteers to distribute aid on the ground at the Greek-Macedonian border.
A social event of wine and snacks was organised by Holly Taylor, of Downs View, Bradford on Avon, and she was thrilled with the success of the evening, which far surpassed her expectations.
“I expected to have four or five donations, so to get over 20 boxes and £400 worth of donations for postage was wonderful,” she said.
“We feel very passionately about this and what was great was how easy it was to organise it and make an impact.
"All it took was a little bit of research and look what we’ve accomplished.
“I don’t see it as a political issue, it is a human issue. It is horrific what they are having to go through and the Government has to do a lot more than we are doing now.
“Maybe people feel they can’t do anything to help but this just shows that a group of friends getting together, donating and enjoying an evening with a glass of wine can make a difference.”
Such was the success of the event, the Tesco branch in Trowbridge has also donated supplies to add to their delivery, which will be shipped off to refugee families at the end of October.
