IT WAS a real sense of community in Winsley on Saturday as locals descended upon the Seven Stars pub for their family fun day, raising £1,500 for local schools to boot.

The funds were raised towards Winsley Primary School and local pre-school Acorns in a day of live music, face painting, sumo wrestling, food, drink and much more.

“I was overwhelmed with the support that the locals gave us. I really think the day paid off for everyone," said pub owner Kate Hooper, who was approached by local businessman Paul Hammond with the idea several months ago.

Neil Coxon, Chair of Governors at the Primary School, said: "This was a fabulous occasion for the village with something to keep everyone entertained.

"This was such a great day that we hope it becomes an annual event for the community. The fact that Kate so kindly donated so much needed funds to our schools from the money she raised is truly amazing.”

Mrs Hooper, who has a daughter at both the school and pre-school, added: "Despite the hard work, we are already planning next year’s event."
