A MELKSHAM couple were left feeling the chill after a lump of ice fell from the sky and landed on their roof.

Keith Mead and his wife Ruth were at their home on Corncockle Close when the hefty object – believed to have come off a plane – fell from the sky.

The 70-year-old said: “We’d just finished breakfast and we heard this massive bang and thought someone had crashed a car or something.

“When we went outside there was a large amount of debris scattered around including roofing tiles and ice.

“We took lots of pictures and even kept one of the pieces of ice for a little while just until we sorted things out with the insurance company.

“It weighed about half a kilogram and fitted into the palm of your hand.”

Despite causing no injuries, damage was caused to the roof of Mr Mead’s house including tiles being smashed and the roofing felt being torn.

“The surveyor has come out and We’re going to have to have scaffolding put up for at least a day while they repair the damage,” said Mr Mead.

“Everything is being covered by the insurance but I would have thought the cost would be between £500 and £1,000.

“A little part of me has thought ‘why did it have to hit my house?’ We’ve only been living here for just a year.”

He added: “If it had hit anyone it would have killed them stone dead without question, so it was quite lucky that it didn’t.”

“I asked the builder who came along to do a temporary fix if he had seen anything like this before and he said he’d been doing his job for a long time but had never actually seen anything like this.”
