SAFETY campaigners are celebrating after improvements to a pedestrian crossing in Atworth.

The new-look crossing over the main A365 now has painted zigzags, orange halo lights funded by Wiltshire Council, and brighter street lights paid for by the Highways Agency.

Atworth Parish Council collected over 250 signatures from villagers calling on Wiltshire Council to make the crossing safer after several near-misses and campaigners were joined by MP Michelle Donelan at the unveiling of the new-look crossing.

Effie Gale-Sides, chairman of the parish council, said: “The village is extremely grateful to Wiltshire Council for their generous grant and to Michelle Donelan for her help and support in making our village pedestrian crossing safe. It is an excellent result and will go a long way in making our busy main road much safer.”

Miss Donelan said: “Improving pedestrian safety is vitally important to our communities.

"The A365 is a very busy and fast road and a number of constituents had raised concerns about near misses when trying to cross, especially with children.

"I am delighted that Wiltshire Council was able to respond to Atworth’s request.

"The new crossing is a vast improvement on its predecessor and it makes it far safer for local residents to cross their village.”
