AN investigation is underway at Melksham Oak Community School after parts of the main building were flooded on Monday.

More than 1,250 pupils at Melksham Oak Community School were given the day off on Monday because of flooding.

The school discovered over the weekend that a blanking screw had failed on a pipe carrying mains water.

Head teacher Stephen Clark said: “The causes of the flooding will be investigated. We don’t want similar events to occur.

"Unfortunately, a blanking screw failed on a three-inch pipe carrying mains water.

“The water flooded the canteen, a lecture theatre, part of the kitchen, design and technology and science classrooms and some corridors. It was an inch or so deep in some places and the staff who came in had to wear wellies.

“We were forced to close the school for the day because we were unable to use the kitchen and canteen to prepare and serve food.”

A nine-strong group from the school’s leadership team helped to get rid of the water that flooded the building. The school hired in industrial machines to help remove it and dry the rooms out.

The school’s 1,250 pupils were all given the day off. However, some of the 200 staff came in as usual. The school re-opened on Tuesday as normal.
