WILTSHIRE Fire and Rescue Service firefighters got their hands dirty during a charity car wash at Trowbridge Fire Station on Saturday in aid of the Fire Fighters Charity.

Trowbridge drivers were able to visit the fire station in Hilperton Road to get their car cleaned by the crew in return for donations towards the charity, with the event raising £712.51.

Barclays Bank has agreed to match the amount the firefighters raised, bringing the final total up to £1,425.02. There was also a similar event held Westlea Fire Station in Swindon on the same day.

The Fire Fighters Charity provides help to serving and retired personnel, their widows and young dependants through the provision of sheltered accommodation, recuperative facilities, rehabilitation and therapy, as well as giving financial support to those who need it.

The charity works with some 11,000 beneficiaries every year at a cost of £9 million per annum, and these services are financed almost exclusively by fundraising.

As well as washing cars in return for donations, the firefighters were on hand to advise visitors on home fire safety and provide information to those interested in becoming an ‘on-call’ firefighter.
