A TROWBRIDGE eatery could be crowned the best takeaway in Britain next week after they were nominated in a national food competition.

Nacho Cheese on Union Street has been named in the top five in the South West for the British Takeaway Awards and will battle it out against nearly 100 other takeouts at the finals in London on Monday.

Started by Lorraine Priestley, 44 and Adie Willis, 47, three years ago, the Tex-Mex diner has gone from strength to strength and now boasts a range of authentic dishes including burritos, quesadillas, fajitas, burgers and enchiladas.

Miss Priestley said: “When we found out we were gobsmacked to be honest because we were asked a couple of weeks ago if we had entered but we never thought of going for it because we’re only a small place in Trowbridge,” she said.

“We put some flyers in people’s orders to let them know about the awards which were going to close in six days and because some of these places have had since the summer we didn’t expect to come anywhere.

“We’ve never entered anything really and our customers voted for us and it is just amazing. We still don’t know whether to laugh or cry at the moment.”

After starting the business in an industrial unit, the couple said they have gone from having five family staff members to employing 15 people – all of which they share their unprecedented success with.

During the finals, awards will be handed out to the best in each region, the Just-Eat top takeaway and the prize that everyone’s eyes are on – the best in the country.

Mr Willis said: “We cook everything from fresh and we make up our own sauces and bottle them and so we put a lot of effort into it.

“I think coming this far, we do not care if we win or lose because it is a massive achievement to get in the top five in the South West.”

The finals are at The Savoy Hotel, London on Monday
