DISABLED driver Carol Tucker says she is living in fear of what vandals might do to her car next after being targeted numerous times in the last few months.

Mrs Tucker, of Dursley Road, Trowbridge said her car, which is supplied through Disability Living Allowance, is her lifeline for leading a normal life but due to the damage caused, she’s fearful that she soon won’t feel safe going outdoors.

“Our last car had been damaged too and with DLA, you can get a good condition bonus and we were worried we will lose it because there’s damage to the rear side door, the offside door, the front door as well as the bumper,” the 59-year-old said.

“We’ve had the car a month and it was damaged two weeks later so we thought we would move it to a different place but it was still damaged like it had been targeted.”

Wiltshire police confirmed they have been called six times to reports of criminal damage despite Mrs Tucker and her husband John moving the car to deter vandals.

A spokesman said they are aware of the incidents and will inform the local team to carry out extra patrols in the area.

The couple, who moved to Trowbridge three years ago from Melksham, have even looked into the prospect of installing CCTV and a driveway at their home, which is rented from Selwood Housing, but so far have had no luck due to excessive costs.

Mrs Tucker, who is registered disabled after giving up work in 2004, added: “I’m terrified by it all. Police have said they can’t do anything because no one sees what happens.

“I’m frightened that we are going to lose this car and we can’t have CCTV or a disabled driveway because there’s cars parked opposite from us and the council said we would have to pay. We moved because I was finding it hard with the stairs but we didn’t expect to move to this.”

Repair costs have been estimated to be in the hundreds region but they are hesitant to pay out the money in case the damage continues. The couple would like financial help to secure a driveway.

A Wiltshire Council spokesperson said: “Unfortunately we’re not able to help with this situation. Our recommendation would be that the resident speak to their housing association to see if they are able to provide any possible options or solutions.”
