THE United Church in Trowbridge is looking to unite a couple with a photo taken on their wedding day after they stumbled across the memento while clearing out the church buildings.

Volunteers who found the photo, believed to have been taken in the 1970s, have so far exhausted their options in trying to trace the loving couple but are now appealing for the public’s help.

The clear out is ahead of the United Church’s final service to be held next Sunday after the buildings have been put up for sale due to financially unviable costs for repair work.

Teresa Daniels, who has worked at the church for nine years said while the clear out is a sad occasion, the volunteers hope to bring a little happiness to the couple by re-uniting them with the photo.

“We are closing down and we have this photo which has been on the wall of a wedding and we do not know who it belongs to,” the 49-year-old added.

“It would be nice to give it back to the couple that are getting married in it or even their family.

“We have tried every avenue in tracing it back to the couple and we think the photo was taken in the 1970s judging by who is the organist in the photo as well as the minister taking the ceremony. They have both since passed away.”

The A2 size photograph in a wooden frame has been hung upstairs in the church for many years and features the couple stood at the alter with two young flower girls.

Mrs Daniels added: “We have looked through the old marriage books but they only go back to 1985 and we’ve asked everyone in the congregation – many of whom have been with the church for many decades.

“It might well be someone not from Trowbridge but someone who wanted to get married in the church but either way if we can reunite it with the couple that would be lovely.

“A lot of things we have come across are going to Trowbridge Museum and they are going to be displaying a lot of things as well as keeping much of it in storage.”

The farewell service, to be held at 10am and 4pm next Sunday, will also see the congregation pay farewell to Revd David Ellis who will be retiring after five years at the United Church.

The interim moderator taking the Rev Ellis’ place will be Susan Henderson.
