HOME made bird feeders are now dotted around gardens in Trowbridge after youngsters enjoyed a free workshop at the town’s museum on Wednesday.

The museum’s learning and outreach officer, David Birks, was kept busy from 10.30am-3.30pm as he taught children how to make bird feeders.

They did this by decorating their pots, putting holes into them, tying a piece of string into the pots and mashing it all together with some lard and putting all sorts of ingredients, such as cheerios and dried insects, in them for the birds.

Harley Thorne, five, said: “I am having a lot of fun. The birds can eat from this. Today has been great.”

Abigail Slade, five, said: “My favourite bit was mixing the seed and the lard - it is yucky.”

Kylah Brewer, 10, added: “I am looking forward to putting this in the garden and feeding it to the birds. I have really enjoyed this.”

Mr Birks was delighted with the response from the children.

“The enthusiasm from the children has been fantastic. We have done this before and it always proves to be popular,” he said.

“It is a really fun and different activity that is easy for everyone to enjoy.”
