NO more than 900 new homes should be built in Warminster, and roads to new employment areas should not go past existing homes, say town councillors in their response to the West Warminster Urban Extension.

The town council has written a letter to Wiltshire Council raising concerns over 14 areas of the draft plan.

The council believes there is not enough mention of the effect more traffic will have on local roads, particularly the impact on West Street.

However the council wants the plan to go ahead.

Cllr Pip Ridout said: “The urban expansion is not perfect and never will be, but we should accept as an overall strategic plan.

“The developers have made it quite clear that there will be no further consultation and that the individual planning applications from developers will go ahead regardless.

“If the plan is rejected then it will only make one difference. Instead of a brake on development to 900 houses before 2026, it will be a free for all and the consequences could be even worse.

“There are areas that require further explanation, improvement or negotiation such as drainage system and traffic impact, especially on West Street, and cohesion with the emerging neighbourhood plan.”
