SAFETY is a key issue on one of the main roads which leads into Warminster, according to a member of the West Wilts Ramblers group.

Brian Micklam, the group’s footpath secretary, thinks it is only a matter of time before someone is seriously injured and would like to see a bridleway put in place to make it safer.

He contacted The Wiltshire Times to raise his concerns after reading that a 20-year-old girl’s car had flipped onto its roof on the road on Tuesday, November 15.

The 77-year-old said: “There’s a very nasty corner on that road and we are trying to make a case for Wessex Water to make it safer, as they own the land there, but we are getting nowhere.

“We can’t see which direction traffic is coming when we cross, which makes it very dangerous. The accident which took place a few weeks ago only highlights that point.

“This applies to both walkers and horse riders, who I know would also like to see changes made to the road.

“It’s a very fast, dangerous road with a lot of traffic coming along it and accidents do happen.

“We would like a bridleway to be put in to make it easier for walkers and horse riders to cross over.

“Hundreds of years ago the road went in a straight line but over the years it has changed and now has lots of twists and turns on.”

The walking group walks on Wednesday and Sunday and Mr Micklam added that the group avoids that area on their walks if possible due to concerns over safety.

A spokesman from Wessex Water said: “The West Wilts Ramblers group have requested to be able to walk along our land as currently they have to walk on Westbury Road where there is no footpath.

“Our estates department has had contact with the group and we have made an offer to grant a permissive footpath along our land, which the public can walk on. Discussions regarding this are still ongoing.”
