THE headmaster of Warminster School completed a gruelling desert challenge over Easter to raise money for the building of a new girls' primary school in Uganda.

Mark Mortimer, along with his friend Julian Thomas, headmaster of Wellington College, took on and completed the Marathon des Stables in the Sahara Desert.

It consisted of six stages over seven days in temperatures of around 50°C to complete the 156-mile course.

Pupils at the college watched online coverage via a webcam which showed Mr Mortimer crossing the finish line.

The duo, known as Heads in the Sand, have already raised half of their target of £10,000 for the building of the main accommodation blocks in the teachers’ village at the school.

A dinner and an audience with Heads in the Sand will be organised to raise further funds for those who wish to hear about the full race story.
