INSPIRED by his diabetic daughter’s courage, a dad-of-three is going to take on a gruelling mountainous challenge to raise money for two charities.

Ian Keighley, from Sherrington, near Warminster, will take on the Three Peaks Challenge with 15 of his co-workers at Cygnia Maintenance on July 9 to boost funds for Marie Curie and Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF).

His nine-year-old daughter, Esme, who attends Sutton Veny Primary School, was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes two years ago and has to be injected with insulin at least four times a day.

Mr Keighley, 48, said: “It was devastating when Esme was diagnosed, our whole lifestyle changed.

“We have to plan her food intake so carefully before doing anything and she can’t go to birthday parties anymore as we don’t know what she’ll eat there.

“Yet despite this and the fact she has to be injected a minimum of four times a day by me and my wife Sarah-Jane, she’s so brave and just gets on with it.

“If she can manage that, I’m sure I can manage a few blisters for the sake of raising money for two great charities.”

The Three Peaks Challenge involves walking up Snowdon, Scafell Pike and Ben Nevis, a combined total of 3,408 metres, in under 24 hours.

“It should be pretty intense but I’m looking forward to it,” added Mr Keighley, who works as a maintenance engineer for Cygnia.

“I’ve been training by taking my two dogs, Blue and Basil, out for walks – hopefully that’ll do the trick.

“I would be so grateful if people can donate to help children in Esme’s situation.”
