MAKING all own brand packaging recyclable, reusable or compostable by 2025 is a priority for Morrisons stores across the county after reducing plastic is identified as an important issue.

Following research which showed plastic reduction to be the third most important issue to Morrisons customers, the supermarket giant has announced that it has signed WRAP’s UK Plastics PACT, an industry initiative which aims to transform the way businesses use plastic and prevent plastics polluting the environment.

Currently 82 per cent of the plastic in the supermarket’s packaging is recyclable, but to achieve 100 per cent Morrisons plans to remove unnecessary packaging, allow customers to bring their own containers for meat and fish from the fresh counters and fitting water fountains into new stores.

We spoke to customers at the Warminster Morrisons store to see what they thought about the planned changes thought to benefit the environment.

Patricia Forbes, who shops at Morrisons twice a week said: “This is a great move for Morrisons to make.

“I think it will make a real difference.”

Julie Pyatt who shops in the store every Friday said: “Making packaging recyclable sounds like a very positive step.

“I support recycling where ever possible.”

David Potts, Chief Executive of Morrisons, said: “Reducing the damage caused by plastic is one of the most challenging issues society can address.

“Because we make most of the fresh food we sell, we’re in an important position to make changes to our packaging.

“Joining WRAP’s Plastic PACT also offers a special opportunity to work collaboratively to take this opportunity.”
