Another 300 homes could be added to an estate planned on the edge of Westbury, under the gaze of the town’s iconic White Horse.

Robert Hitchens Ltd already has planning permission for 220 homes on one side of the A350 on the Trowbridge side of town, granted in March despite Westbury Town Council raising concerns over road congestion.

Now the company want to build an extra 300 homes on the other side of the main road, on a triangle of land between the railway and Bitham Park Road.

Its scheme includes providing 30 per cent affordable housing, a village green and children’s play areas.

A new roundabout on the A350, between the railway bridge and the roundabout at the bottom of Bitham Park, would help control traffic in and out of the new estates.

John Hall, from agents AMEC, gave a presentation to the town council’s planning committee on Monday, when he said: “The development would have an acceptable visual impact, in particular from Westbury’s White Horse.”

Cllr David Jenkins said: “I was very concerned when I saw the proposed roundabout on what is a fast and dangerous road. It is something that needs to be looked at.”

The Cheltenham firm have already done ecological, archaeological and landscape assessments, with surveys of noise, air quality, transport and socio-economic impact due before an exhibition to ask public opinion next month.

A planning application is likely to go to Wiltshire Council in mid-July.

A spokesman said: “This would bring much-needed, good-quality homes to meet local demand and help Wiltshire Council meet its housing needs for the area in the next five to 10 years.”
