Whole families will be helped to bloom thanks to a charity project to create an allotment in Westbury.

Wiltshire Families First has been given a plot of land at The Groves but now need a volunteer gardener to help them get growing.

Esther Schmidt, the charity’s children’s services manager, said: “We are looking for a volunteer with an interest and expertise in gardening to set up our first allotment.

“They would oversee the day-to-day running of the allotment, source equipment from businesses in the area and work alongside other volunteers and the families we support.”

Wiltshire Families First is an intensive family support service run by Action for Children. It helps families, often where parents have a history of mental health problems, cope with everyday life.

It acts as an early intervention programme to improve the life chances of children by offering their families intensive support and parenting programmes.

Mrs Schmidt said: “We think the allotment will be an ideal opportunity for families to work together to grow produce.

“We would also then hope to do cookery lessons using the produce and have the opportunity to talk about healthy eating.”

The charity is being helped by Lucy Bates, the manager of Edington Farm Shop, who is giving advice on what vegetables can be easily grown.
