EIGHT weeks after having half her bathroom ripped apart by her housing association landlord, multiple sclerosis sufferer Michelle Taylor says she is living a nightmare, and that a relapse brought on by the stress has put her back in a wheelchair.

Sanctuary Housing came out to treat mould and a leak at her house on Campion Close, Westbury, more than two months ago and left the upstairs bathroom with half a floor and no replacement shower. After calls from the Wiltshire Times, they are now promising to finish the work next week.

Mrs Taylor, 44, who lives with her husband, Robert, and two children, Nick and Shannon, said: “There was mould and it was leaking and so they stripped the shower out.

“Since then I’ve been chasing them up but I haven’t heard anything and they don’t seem to be bothered.

“Going into the bathroom in my wheelchair, it feels like it’s tipping over.

“I’ve got in touch with Adult Care at Wiltshire Council and they have emailed the housing association but we haven’t heard back.

“I’m just getting more stressed about it and I’ve suffered a relapse and I’m now back in my wheelchair. At one point it got to the stage where I was paralysed from the neck down.

“My children are getting quite upset because I’m getting upset.

“There’s nothing we can do until they come back out, it’s a house adapted for a disabled person so you can’t do anything yourself or they will say it hasn’t been done properly.

“We do have a downstairs bathroom but can’t use the shower because that leaks too.”

Mrs Taylor, who has lived in the house for more than 10 years, developed MS, a neurological condition that affects the nerves in the brain and spinal cord and causes mobility problems, aged 29.

After the Wiltshire Times contacted Sanctuary Housing, the company have confirmed the work will now be completed next week.

Martin Daymond, SW operations manager for Sanctuary Maintenance Contractors Ltd said: “We do apologise to Mr and Mrs Taylor for the length of time this repair has taken to resolve. We originally attended what we thought was a leaking seal around the upstairs bath and shower, however, we later discovered a more significant problem and instructed a contractor to make specialist repairs which involved taking up some of the flooring.

“The property does have alternative shower and toilet facilities, however we appreciate the loss of their upstairs bathroom has caused considerable inconvenience. Following a visit by a surveyor today (Wednesday) we can confirm that our contractor aims to complete the repairs next week.”
