WESTBURY Lions and Leos teamed up on Saturday to pick up litter in Westbury ahead of Remembrance Sunday at the weekend.

A total of 19 people took to the streets in the town centre to collect rubbish and put them into bags which were collected by Wiltshire Council on Monday morning.

Westbury Leos are a younger group of Westbury Lions made up of pupils from Matravers School.

Lion Mike Pearce said: “We were asked by the Leos if we would like to help them with a litter pick and of course we said yes.

“They cleaned for the Queen in the town in May and really enjoyed it so they said they would like to do two litter picks every year to keep the town looking its best.

“We approached the town council with the idea and they were delighted with it, so we organised the event and got to work on Saturday.

“We were delighted with the turnout, especially considering it was the first ever one, and everyone seemed to have a good time – maybe that was because of the free biscuits on offer.”

After the event was publicised in the Wiltshire Times, several residents also got stuck in to give the Lions and Leos a helping hand.

Two of the young Lions were tasked with cleaning the town’s memorial ahead of Armistice Day on Friday (November 11), when residents will remember those who died in wars.

Head teacher Dr Simon Riding said: “Matravers School is delighted to be one of a very small number schools in the country to be linked to the excellent Leos clubs.

“We have established great links with the Westbury Lions and are grateful for all their tireless work.

“Our Leos are able to demonstrate their excellent community spirit and character through engaging in many local activities, placing our school at the heart of the Westbury community.”
