Families in Green Lane in Trowbridge are still fighting plans to renovate a former care home, which they fear could become a bail hostel.

Maplyn Care Services’ plans is to convert Green-wood House into six flats and an office. The company says it will provide 24-hour support and therapy there for people with long-term mental illnesses, and has denied the bail hostel claims.

Richard Hall, who lives in Green Lane with his partner Kate Drew and their children Jasmine, 12, Tom, 10, and Emilia, eight, said: “There is a lot of concern about what we’ll actually be getting on our doorstep.

"We feel sorry for those who have to use the service, but believe this location is completely wrong.

“The company isn’t telling us anything about the type of people they’ll be bringing. We are fearful we will not be able to let our kids out by themselves.”

Plans were submitted in December, but withdrawn. The new application is more detailed.

Peter Evans, Maplyn’s director of care, said: “Maplyn Care Services will not offer bail hostel or court diversion accommodation at Green Lane. It will solely be a therapeutic environment for persons diagnosed with mental illness who are assessed as being well and ready for step down support before independent living.”

The campaigners have sought support from Trowbridge Town Council, Wiltshire Council’s Dennis Drewett and MP Andrew Murrison.

Cllr Drewett said: “I have requested that this application not be decided in an office. I’ve called it in, to go to the western area planning committee so residents can discuss the issue.”

The deadline for formal comments is April 22.
