LED Zeppelin, The Beatles, Rolling Stones and Shirley Bassey are among the stars who have graced New York’s Carnegie Hall with their presence.

And Warminster’s Military Wives Choir will join that elite group after six of their members perform at the prestigious venue on Friday (May 27).

The choir, comprised of wives of men serving in the military and veterans, were asked to make the journey to New York by composer Paul Mealor, and are flying over to New York today (Wednesday).

Abigail Watson, events coordinator of the choir, said: “It’s been quite an incredible journey for us, many of whom are just amateur singers. We’re about to perform in one of the most famous venues in the world, it's crazy.

“We’re incredibly excited but also a bit nervous, it’s going to be a real night to remember, that's for sure.

“There are around 30 choirs from all over the UK over, with a total of around 135 singers from choirs in London, Northern Ireland and more, performing on the night. We’ve had three rehearsals together and the sound we’ve produced has been beautiful.

“We actually made the choir leader cry in our latest rehearsal as he couldn’t believe how far we’ve come in such a short space of time.

"We can't wait to get up on stage."

Joanna Grant, one of Warminster’s choir members, will sing the solo for ‘Wherever You Are’ at the concert, which was Christmas number one and sold 556,000 copies in one week in 2012.

The Military Wives Choirs Foundation is a charity which brings women in the military community closer together through singing.
