FRIENDS, colleagues and associates past and present paid tribute to long-serving college principal George Bright at a lunch in the grounds of Wiltshire College Lackham on Friday.

Mr Bright, who became principal of Trowbridge College in 1992 and helped steer the successful merger with Chippenham and Lackham to form Wiltshire College, of which he has been principal since 2000, leaves in August and is planning a round the world trip with his wife Gill.

On his return he wants to take consultancy and managerial work. As well as presentations of gifts in appreciation of work, it was announced that Mr Bright has been given an Honourary Fellowship of Bath University in recognition of the close relationship he has forged with that university.

Mr Bright, a father-of-two who lives in Trowbridge, cited the opening of the Arc Theatre on the Trowbridge campus as one of the highlights of his career in Trowbridge. He also helped found the Wessex Association of Chambers of Commerce.

Di Dale, principal of Stroud College in Gloucestershire, will be Mr Bright's successor.
