READERS of The Westmorland Gazette have given a resounding "no" to Kendal's experimental traffic scheme being made permanent, reports Mike Addison.

Nearly 450 calls were made to our special telephone poll line - 299 of them gave the experimental traffic scheme the thumbs down, compared to 138 in favour of it continuing.

The poll was set up in response to Cumbria County Council employing a team of independent consultants at a cost of £17,000 to assess the economic impact of the scheme on businesses in the town.

Floods of letters have also been sent to The Westmorland Gazette since the new arrangements began.

The poll asked: " Should Kendal's experimental traffic system be made permanent?"

The result will now be passed on to Cumbria County Council and analysts from Preston-based Rural Innovation, who are carrying out a study to assess the economic impact of phase one of the town centre traffic changes.

Rural Innovation will be carrying out a survey of shoppers and consumers on September 13 and 14.
