WESTBURY United's five-match unbeaten run came to an end last night as they were beaten by league leaders Hengrove Athletic.

Hengrove started brightly, with Rhys Hickery heading Scott Lewis’ cross over the bar and Ricky Charlton forcing Lewis Porter into a smart save with a 20-yard curler.

United lost in-form striker Nathan Hallett to injury but ironically their best spell of the match came straight after with several pacy attacks creating chances.

Apatient passing moving ended with Matt Mead firing a 35-yarder that skidded off the frosty surface and keeper Liam Macfarlane spilt the ball before claiming it.

Then a superb move between Mead and Mark Young allowed the latter the chance to shoot and his left-footed strike flew just wide.

Another opportunity came soon afterwards when Phil Hampson and Mead combined to set up Paul Beavers, whose effort was blocked.

Athletic got their act together again in the closing stages of the half, with Mark Fear shooting wide from 18 yards and Porter making the best save of the game to tip over James Dunn’s shot.

Hengrove scored both of their goals soon after the break but they didn’t have to show any top of the table class to do so.

On 50 minutes, Charlton’s cross should have been easy for David Whyte to deal with, but he inexplicably played it poorly, allowing Hickery to smash the ball into the net.

Whyte would atone for his error later in the match with a number of typically excellent tackles.

The clinching goal came just a few minutes later when Stanley fouled Dunn at the same time as Porter claimed the ball in the six-yard box - Ben Bament stepped up and scored from the spot to make it 2-0.

The rest of the match was a quiet affair with United barely threatening a comeback and their best effort was when Beavers headed over from a Mead set piece.

Hengrove had a few chances to increase their lead with Dunn heading wide and Bament volleying just past the post.

Sam Goodin's side travel to Roman Glass St George this weekend.
