BATH lock Dave Attwood reckons his side’s New Year’s resolution should be to fulfil their potential in the Aviva Premiership by becoming more clinical.

Tom Heathcote’s late penalty try saw Bath hold Exeter to a 12-12 draw and maintain their unbeaten record over their West Country rivals last Saturday.

Attwood says that he and his Rec teammates were disappointed not to have run out as winners at Sandy Park but thinks that Gary Gold’s men are moving in the right direction.

“We were really disappointed to be going in to half-time 6-5 down and all of a sudden, we were looking down the barrel at 12-5,” said the second rower.

“At that point, it would have been easy to throw in the towel because we had the wind against us and knew that Exeter had a great home record but we didn’t do that and we kept battling on.

“After reviewing the game though, I think that the overriding feeling is that we maybe should have won and been a bit more clinical during our dominance in the first half.

“I do think that we have all of the components of a championship-winning team here but at times, we haven’t quite shown that.

“There are basic things that we need to try and execute all the time, whether that be a 40-yard kick from your own 22 or driving home a line-out from five yards out.

“Some of those things we pull off once every five times when we’re capable of doing it every time.”

Despite feeling that Bath have all the necessary ingredients to move up the Premiership table, Attwood warned that his side must practice patience.

He added: “A great year would be with us ending this season in the play-off positions but we need to concentrate on our short-term goals first – we don’t want to throw the baby out with the bathwater.

“We’ve just got to try and concentrate on trying to be more ruthless and clinical and important games like the one against Wasps (3pm, Sunday) this weekend.

“They’re just above us so it’s an important match.”
