THERE was no fairytale A&B Cup Final ending for Marco Wood after his third division Levi’s outfit, who had claimed the scalps of second division sides Steeple Ashton, Broughton Gifford, Westbury Town and then first division Seend United to reach the final of the Briken Motors & AM Print & Copy-sponsored competition, saw their dreams of lifting the cup ended by newly-crowned Division one champions Boomsbury.

A healthy crowd turned up at Meadow Lane, hoping for Levi’s to produce another upset.

But from the first whistle the underdogs were up a against it as Boomsbury looked to assert their authority on the game and from their very first corner the had the chance to take the lead, Dave Appleyard’s great delivery picked out Matt Jones who blasted the first real chance of the night over the bar.

On 10 minutes, a poorly-delivered corner from Appleyard was cleared back to him and his second effort to get the ball into the area saw the ball fall at the feet of Scott Askew, who from on the goal line skied the ball over the bar when it looked easier to score.

Two minutes later Askew missed another good chance to give his team the lead when he headed over a Pete Spong corner.

Levi’s had to wait until the 25th minute to get their first sight at goal and when it came, Levi Wood’s long-range effort failed to trouble keeper Luke Mayne.

From their first corner on 31 minutes Jonathan Hogarth flashed a shot wide of the target as neither side were unable to find an opening.

The deadlock was finally broken on 35 minutes, Dan Dominy thumped a shot against the post and the ball rebounded to Carl Davies who looked to be offside.

With no flag raised Davies turned the ball home to put Boomsbury 1-0 up.

With their tails up Boomsbury went in search of a second, Dominy set up Spong who fire over from 18 yards but on 37 minutes they broke through again, a Darren Jones cross was met by the head of Askew whose delightful header made it 2-0.

With the first half drawing to a close, Askew put another good chance wide of the target and Levi’s Jon Hogarth could only find the safe hands of Mayne as he attempted to reduce the arrears with a rasping shot from 20 yards out.

Two goals to the good at the break people were expecting the floodgates to open in the second half, but that wasn’t the case as on 52 minutes Levi’s got themselves back in the game, Jason Povey making the most of a defensive error to fire the ball beyond keeper Mayne who got his hands to the shot but was unable to keep it out.

or the next five minutes Levi’s enjoyed their best spell of the game and almost scored a second Povey doing all the hard work before his final shot let him down.

Boomsbury manager Ben Howe made a double substitution on 58 minutes bringing on John Baker and Oli Howe and within two minutes they have restored their two=goal lead.

Howe picking out Dan Dominy with a glorious first ball and the midfielder drove home a stunning effort from 18 yards to make it 3-1.

The third goal seemed to knock the stuffing out of Levi’s and with half an hour remaining it was a case of how many more Boomsbury would score.

Askew saw a chipped effort come back of the bar and Ali Bradley was only denied by a great stop from keeper Tom Furnnal. John Baker was next to be thwarted by keeper Furnnal who produced a breathtaking stop to keep his left footed rocket out.

Askew then saw three good chances go begging before he completed the scoring on 85 minutes with the goal of the game, a cross from the right picked out the striker unmarked some 20 yards out and he connected first time with the ball to drill it beyond keeper Furnnal to wrap up the win on the night for Ben Howe’s double-winning side.

Presentations to both sides and match officials were made by League Registration Secretary Roxi Meaden.

Winning captain Darren Jones held the A&B Cup aloft and Boomsbury’s Scott Askew received the player of the match trophy in memory of Kevin Mounty.

The game may not have been one of the best finals ever but both teams were commended for the sporting manner in which it was played and referee, Andy Burbidge, assistants’ Derek Leppard and Andy Meaden and fourth official Adam Osboure received praise for their handing of a game that was easy to control.
