PREMIER Division Westbury Rangers were given an almighty scare by third division opponents Old Road FC in the replayed presstoprint-sponsored Eric Hughes Memorial Knockout Cup preliminary round match.

Last Sunday morning’s fixture between the sides was abandoned on 75 minutes following a serious injury to Rangers Ben Mead and at that stage of the game the score was locked at two-apiece.

The teams agreed to get together on Wednesday to give it a second go and a cup classic was finally settled in extra time as Rangers, who had led 3-0 after 30 minutes, struck with 10 minutes remaining to claim a 4-3 win.

Gary Tugwell put Rangers in front on eight minutes, Dan Cox made it 2-0 on 12 minutes and the hosts would have thought they had the tie in the bag when Sam McQueen scored their third in the 30th minute.

Had it not been for the Old Road keeper Josh Bewley their half time advantage would have been even greater.

The second half began with Rangers going in search of a fourth, with only the inspired Bewley standing in their way with a string of great stops.

But the game finished with Old Road hunting a fourth as in a spell of six crazy minutes from the 80th minute they had somehow got themselves back on level terms to threaten an upset.

Dan Stevens started the unlikely comeback when he reduced the arrears on 80 minutes, Jay Watkins cut the gap to the odd goal when he found the net on 83 minutes and the revival was completed when Tom Linacre added Old Road’s third in the 86th minute.

Now in the ascendancy and sensing victory, Old Road were unlucky not to score again as they peppered the Westbury goal looking for a winner.

A shell-shocked Rangers side were able to regroup and in the 100th minute, McQueen planted home his second of the evening to earn Shaun Gardiner’s side a hard-fought victory.

Both teams and referee Shaun Tobin were involved in a contest that was a great advert for grass roots football and like Sunday’s abandoned match was played in a great sporting manner throughout.
