CALNE Eagles came from 3-1 down against Trowbridge Wanderers to secure a much-needed 3 points with a 7-4 win that moved them of the bottom of the Trowbridge Windows & Conservatories, Trowbridge League Division One table.

Star of the show was Eagles’ talismanic captain Stuart Windsor who capped a fine all-round performance by scoring four of his team’s goals.

Calne have experienced a torrid run of injuries this season that has often seen them struggling to raise a team.

However, this has also resulted in the newly-promoted team having to draft in many promising teenage players who have all admirably stood up to the challenge of first division football. Indeed, in this game Calne fielded a five-man midfield, all of whom are under 18 years old.

Trowbridge Wanderers were undoubtedly the dominant team in the first half and they took the lead after only 10 minutes when striker Craig Gornall headed home on his first appearance of the season.

Wanderers then doubled their advantage after 22 minutes in slightly fortuitous circumstances. Calne defender Phil Gay was sent crashing to the ground by a late challenge from Gornall, which let in winger Elliott Doddington who slide the ball past Andy Windsor in goal.

Calne pulled a goal back on the counter attack after 25 minutes when Windsor was brought down by Wanderers’ keeper James Harmen inside the box.

Windsor picked himself to score his ninth goal of the season from the penalty spot. However, Wanderers regained their lead with 10 minutes of the half remaining when Jamie Moth fired home an unstoppable shot from just outside the box.

Right on the stroke of half time Calne scored a crucial goal to make the score 3-2 through 17 year-old Rhys Elliot.

The young winger marked his debut in men’s football by firing an unstoppable shot from the edge of the box into the bottom corner of the goal.

This goal clearly lifted Calne going into the interval as it kept them in a game that probably should have been beyond them after such a disjointed first half performance.

In the second half Calne raised their game considerably and were very quickly rewarded when Windsor powerfully headed home Jordan Winter’s corner kick after 48 minutes.

Soon after Calne took the lead for the first time when centre back Brett Cullen stabbed the ball over the line from close range following another Jordan Winter corner.

After this goal Calne took total control of the game and Windsor completed his hat-trick after great work from 16 year-old Joe Thompson.

Windsor then scored his 70th goal since joining Calne Eagles when he headed home.

In final stages both teams were awarded penalties. Windsor was once again fouled inside the box which also resulted in Wanderers being reduced to 10 men. This time Danny Thompson fired home the penalty.

Then in the very last minute Brett Cullen brought down Billal Karmouni inside the Calne box and veteran striker Nigel Penelhum made no mistake from the spot to complete the manic 7-4 score line.

Steeple Ashton 1 North Bradley 3

WITH most of their fellow title contenders in Knockout Cup action, Chris Carr’s table-topping North Bradley side collected another three points from their 3-1 triumph away at Steeple Ashton to open up an eight point lead at the summit.

Steeple Ashton took the lead on 38 minutes courtesy of a penalty from Marc Sheppard. Bradley drew level four minutes later when they got lucky, a Jason Povey shot ricocheted to Scott Askew who tapped in from close range for 1-1.

After the break Ashton gave as good as they got but couldn’t do anything about the goal that restored Bradley’s lead.

Matt Coles picked the ball up 30 yards from goal and drove home a left footed thunderbolt through a crowd of players to make it 2-1.

Five minutes later Bradley added their third, good interplay between Tim Coombes and Jordan De Silva resulted in the later squaring the ball to Scott Askew who netted his second of the game and seal victory number eight of the season for his side.
