EQUESTRIAN: Doel excels at Belton

REYBRIDGE eventer David Doel enjoyed a successful outing at Belton International Horse Trials, in Lincolnshire last weekend.

Doel won the Askham Bryan College Open Intermediate U21 class, under the watchful eye of the Askham Bryan College British Young Rider selectors, on Miss Caruso, owned by Jane James.

The pair produced a strong dressage test scoring 24.6 penalties, to hold the lead alongside Tom Jackson (Waltham Fiddlers Find) going into the showjumping phase, where a pole down in the showjumping added a further four faults to David’s score.

The World Class Development Programme rider then produced a good cross-country, going clear just a fraction outside the time to finish on a score of 31.8 in only the combination’s second-ever outing.

Doel also competed Jiggle Jones in intermediate section F, finishing fourth and heads to Weston Park this weekend with with Chap and Billy Pastime, both owned by Gillian Jonas, and Principal Espoir, owned by Ian James.

Badgerstown-based New Zealander Sir Mark Todd took the Grantham Cup title with Leonidas II and topped an advanced section at Belton on Amacuzzi, with Marlborough-based world number one Andrew Nicholson third on Quimbo.

Nicholson was also second in advanced section N on Avebury, as was Lambourn’s Laura Collett on Pamero 4 in intermediate section F.

There was also a second place for Milton Lilbourne-based New Zealander Lizzie Brown in intermediate section H, with Playtime NZPH.

Marlborough’s Pumbaa Goess-Saurau was third in the open novice U18 section on Scotfree II, as was Lower Stanton St Quintin’s Kitty King and Celylor LAN in Open Intermediate section K.

Foxham’s Georgie Spence was fourth and fifth on Billy Ball and Diamond Cove in novice section C.
