SWIMMING: Millward eyes European lift
11:00am Saturday 26th April 2014 in Sport
GOLDEN girl Stephanie Millward is targeting another medal glut after securing her spot in the British Gas GB Para-Swimming team for the 2014 IPC European Championships in Eindhoven in August, writes CARL FIELD.
Box star Millward, who swims for Aquae Sulis club in Bath, secured qualifying times in the S9 100m backstroke, 100m freestyle and 400m freestyle at the British Para-Swimming Interna-tional Meet in Glasgow last weekend.
The 33-year-old has set her sights on another five gold medals at this year’s Europeans, having won a combined eight golds and three silver medals at the 2009 and 2011 events respectively.
That total includes her success in the 4x100 medley and freestyle relay events, which she will also enter in Eindhoven.
Speaking after her swim in Glasgow, she said: “I managed to swim some very good times, even though I was feeling pretty rough on the day, so to qualify for three events isn’t bad. I’m pleased with that, very impressed.
"The aim will be to get golds if I can get them, so hopefully five with the two relays as well, but I just want to make sure I swim good times and swim well.”
Millward has, however, missed out on this year’s Commonwealth Games, which are taking place in Glasgow starting in late July – but she isn’t too disappointed.
“I didn’t swim fast enough in Glasgow last weekend, but I actually think that might be a blessing in disguise," she said.
“The two events are very close together, so it will allow me to focus everything on the Europeans.”
Corsham ASC’s Craig Harris is also on the way to Eindhoven after achieving one European standard qualifying time from the meet, in the SM14 200m individual medley.
Trowbridge ASC’s Chloe Davies and Aaron Moores will also be competing, Moores achieving the required mark in the S14 100m backstroke, as did Davies in the women’s version of the same event and the 200m freestyle.
